Worked example
A buyer pays $30 for a product with free shipping through a creator's affiliate video. TikTok Shop's referral fee is 6% of $30 = $1.80. The seller set a 10% affiliate commission, so the creator earns 10% of $30 = $3.00. Total deductions are $4.80 and the seller settles $25.20. After the $10 unit cost and $5 shipping label, profit is $10.20.
How TikTok Shop fees work
TikTok Shop is the in-app store built into TikTok. Products sell through shoppable videos, live streams, the Shop tab and creator affiliate content, and the buyer never leaves the app. Sellers are brands, dropshippers and small businesses; you need a US business or individual seller account, and TikTok can also store and ship inventory through Fulfilled by TikTok.
The fee structure is unusually simple. TikTok Shop charges a referral fee of 6% on most categories, calculated on what the buyer paid plus any TikTok-funded discount, minus sales tax. Fine jewelry (diamond, gold, jade, platinum, and ruby, sapphire or emerald pieces) and pre-owned goods and collectibles pay 5%. There is no listing fee, no monthly fee and no separate payment processing fee.
The cost that changes the math is affiliate commission. Most TikTok Shop sales come through creators, and you decide what commission to pay them, commonly 10% to 20% of the product revenue, on top of the referral fee. TikTok also applies sales tax to the referral fee itself for sellers registered in Texas and West Virginia since November 1, 2025. The referral fee has moved several times: it rose to 6% on April 1, 2024, and TikTok periodically runs lower promotional rates for new sellers, so check the current offer in Seller Center before you plan margins.
- Referral fee: 6% in most categories, including fashion, beauty, home, electronics, food, toys, sports, pet supplies and books. TikTok's formula is Referral Fee Rate × (Customer Payment + Platform Discount − Tax), charged on every completed order. A discount TikTok funds is added back before the fee is calculated; one you fund is not.
- Reduced categories: 5% on fine jewelry (diamond, gold, jade, platinum or carat gold, ruby, sapphire, emerald) since October 31, 2024, and 5% on pre-owned goods and collectibles such as trading cards, watches, bags, refurbished electronics, coins and comics, with 3% on any portion of a sale over $10,000.
- Affiliate commission (optional): when a creator's video, live stream or showcase link produces the sale, you pay the commission rate you set on that product. TikTok calculates it as (Revenue − Refunds) × Commission rate and pays the creator after the order settles, typically 15 days after delivery.
- No separate processing, listing or subscription fees: TikTok states the referral fee policy covers all TikTok Shop fees other than shipping and tax. Shop Ads, Fulfilled by TikTok (FBT) storage and fulfillment, and platform shipping programs are separate optional costs.
- Refunds: the referral fee is charged only on completed orders, and a partial refund reduces the fee base. TikTok's own example: an order with $102 paid, $5 platform discount and $2 tax pays 6% × $105 = $6.30; after a $51 partial refund the fee falls to $3.15.
- Sales tax on the fee: since November 1, 2025, TikTok Shop adds sales tax to the referral fee on the seller invoice for sellers registered in West Virginia or Texas. No action is needed; it shows in settlement reports.
Ways to keep more of each TikTok Shop sale
- Treat affiliate commission as the real fee. At 6% referral plus a 15% commission, a $30 sale nets $23.70 before your costs, so price affiliate-driven products with at least 25% headroom.
- Set commission per product, not shop-wide. Offer higher rates on high-margin items and keep low-margin staples at the minimum, since commission is only paid on affiliate-attributed orders.
- Discounts you fund lower the referral fee base; discounts TikTok funds do not. A $5 seller coupon on a $30 item saves you $0.30 in referral fee on top of the $5 you gave away.
- Watch the new-seller promotions. TikTok has run reduced referral fee windows for newly onboarded shops; the exact rate and length change by quarter and are listed in Seller Center when you sign up.
- Check your settlement reports for the sales tax line if you are registered in Texas or West Virginia; the tax on the referral fee is small but it is deducted from your payout.

After the order is completed, which is after delivery plus the return window. The referral fee and any affiliate commission are deducted in the settlement, and creators receive their commission after your order settles, typically 15 days after delivery.
