Shopify Fee Calculator (2026)
Shopify charges a monthly subscription ($39 Basic, $105 Grow, $399 Advanced billed monthly) and, with Shopify Payments, an online card fee of 2.9% + 30¢, 2.7% + 30¢ or 2.5% + 30¢ per order. If you use a third-party payment provider instead, Shopify adds a 2%, 1% or 0.6% transaction fee on top of that provider's own charges.

Worked example
A customer pays $80 for products plus $8 shipping, $88 in total, on a store using the Basic plan and Shopify Payments. The online card fee is 2.9% of $88 plus 30¢ = $2.85. The $39 monthly Basic subscription spread over 60 orders adds $0.65 per order. Total fees are $3.50, leaving $84.50. After $30 in cost of goods and $7 to ship, profit on the order is $47.50.
How Shopify fees work
Shopify is not a marketplace: it is the software you use to run your own online store, with your own domain, checkout and customer list. Sellers range from one-person brands to large retailers, and unlike eBay or Amazon nobody takes a commission on each sale. Instead you pay a subscription plus payment processing.
There are three core plans. Basic is $39 a month billed monthly or $29 a month billed yearly; Grow (the plan formerly called "Shopify") is $105 or $79; Advanced is $399 or $299. Shopify Plus for high-volume brands starts at $2,300 a month. Each step up lowers your card rate. With Shopify Payments, online card payments cost 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow and 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced, and in-person tap-and-chip payments cost 2.6%, 2.5% or 2.4% + 10¢. International cards add 1%.
If you route payments through a third-party provider such as PayPal or Authorize.net instead of Shopify Payments, that provider charges its own processing fee and Shopify adds a transaction fee of 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow or 0.6% on Advanced. For most US stores Shopify Payments is the cheaper path. Apps, themes, shipping labels and marketing are extra costs that depend entirely on how you build the store.
- Plan subscription: Basic $39 a month, Grow $105, Advanced $399 when billed monthly; $29, $79 and $299 a month when billed yearly. Shopify Plus starts at $2,300 a month. The subscription is the same whether you sell 5 or 5,000 orders, so its per-order cost falls as volume grows.
- Shopify Payments online card fee: 2.9% + 30¢ per transaction on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow, 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced, 2.25% + 30¢ on Plus. It is charged on the full amount the customer pays, including shipping and tax, and deducted before payout.
- In-person (Shopify POS) card fee: 2.6% + 10¢ on Basic, 2.5% + 10¢ on Grow, 2.4% + 10¢ on Advanced, 2.3% + 10¢ on Plus. Not included in this calculator.
- International cards: add 1% to the online rate on every plan when the customer's card was issued outside the US. Premium cards and alternative payment methods such as PayPal-through-Shopify have their own rates listed on the pricing page.
- Third-party payment provider transaction fee: if you do not use Shopify Payments, Shopify charges 2% of the order on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus, on top of whatever your provider charges (PayPal, Stripe, Authorize.net, etc.). Stores using Shopify Payments pay no transaction fee.
- No per-sale commission, no listing fees. Chargebacks, currency conversion, shipping labels, apps and themes are charged separately and depend on usage.
Ways to keep more of each Shopify sale
- Use Shopify Payments unless you have a specific reason not to. On Basic a third-party gateway costs 2% extra on every order: $2.00 on a $100 sale, before the provider's own fee.
- Pay yearly once the store is proven. Basic drops from $39 to $29 a month, saving $120 a year; Grow saves $312 and Advanced saves $1,200.
- Upgrade by the math, not the feature list. Moving from Basic to Grow costs $66 more a month billed monthly and saves 0.2% per order, so it pays for itself only above about $33,000 a month in card sales, unless you need Grow's staff accounts or reports.
- The 30¢ fixed fee is fixed per transaction, not per item. Bundles and free-shipping thresholds that raise average order value cut your effective rate.
- Fees apply to shipping and tax collected too, because the card fee is charged on the total the customer pays. Price shipping to cover the label plus roughly 3%.

Does Shopify take a percentage of sales?
Not as a commission. You pay a monthly plan fee plus payment processing: 2.9% + 30¢ per online card transaction on Basic with Shopify Payments. Shopify only adds a percentage transaction fee (2%, 1% or 0.6%) if you use a third-party payment provider instead of Shopify Payments.

Does Shopify charge fees on shipping?
The card processing fee is charged on the total amount the customer pays, which includes shipping and sales tax. There is no separate fee on shipping, but the 2.9% applies to it.
When does Shopify pay out?
Shopify Payments deposits sales, minus fees, to your bank account on a rolling schedule; for US stores funds from a sale typically arrive within a few business days. You can see the exact schedule and each payout's fee breakdown under Finances in your admin.
What is the Shopify transaction fee?
A fee Shopify charges only when you accept payments through a provider other than Shopify Payments: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced, 0.2% on Plus. It is in addition to that provider's own processing fee.
Is there a free Shopify plan?
No ongoing free plan. Shopify offers a free trial, after which the regular plan fee applies. The US pricing page lists Basic ($39 a month, or $29 billed yearly) as the lowest tier.
