Worked example
The buyer pays $60 for the item plus $8 shipping, so the total amount of the sale is $68. With no Store, the final value fee is 13.6% of $68 = $9.25, plus a $0.40 per-order fee because the order is over $10. The listing was promoted at a 5% ad rate and sold after a click, so the ad fee is 5% of $68 = $3.40. Total fees are $13.05. eBay pays out $68.00 − $13.05 = $54.95. After the $20 you paid for the item and $6 for the shipping label, profit is $28.95.
How eBay fees work
eBay is the largest general-purpose marketplace for US individual sellers and small businesses: used and new goods, collectibles, parts, electronics, clothing, and almost everything else. Anyone can list, and most sellers get 250 zero-insertion-fee listings a month before the $0.35 insertion fee applies.
The fee stack is simpler than on most marketplaces because eBay handles payments itself and does not add a separate card-processing fee. When an item sells, eBay takes one final value fee: 13.6% of the total amount of the sale in most categories, plus a per-order fee of $0.30 on orders of $10 or less or $0.40 on orders over $10. The "total amount of the sale" includes the item price, shipping and handling charged to the buyer, and sales tax, so the percentage applies to more than your item price.
Some categories are priced differently: 6.7% for guitars and basses, 13.25% for trading cards, 15.3% for books, movies and music, 3% for heavy equipment, and 8% with no per-order fee for athletic shoes that sell for $150 or more. Basic, Premium and Anchor Store subscribers pay a reduced 12.7% in most categories in exchange for a monthly subscription. Optional extras add to the bill: Promoted Listings General charges the ad rate you choose (2% to 100%) on the total sale amount when a promoted item sells, and sales to buyers outside the US carry a 1.65% international fee unless you use eBay International Shipping.
- Final value fee: 13.6% of the total amount of the sale in most categories, calculated per item on the first $7,500, then 2.35% on the portion over $7,500. The total amount of the sale is the item price plus any shipping and handling charged to the buyer plus sales tax. It is charged when the item sells and deducted before your payout.
- Per-order fee: $0.30 on orders of $10 or less and $0.40 on orders over $10, added to the final value fee on every order. Not charged on athletic shoes that sell for $150 or more.
- Category rates that differ from 13.6%: guitars and basses 6.7%; trading cards, comic books and coins 13.25%; books, movies and TV, and music 15.3%; heavy equipment, printing presses and food trucks 3% up to $15,000; athletic shoes 8% when the sale is $150 or more (13.6% under $150); jewelry and watches 15% up to $5,000; women's handbags 15% up to $2,000; NFTs 5%.
- Store subscriptions (optional): Starter $4.95 a month on a yearly plan ($7.95 month to month), Basic $21.95 ($27.95), Premium $59.95 ($74.95), Anchor $299.95 ($349.95), Enterprise $2,999.95 yearly only. Basic and above pay 12.7% in most categories on the first $2,500 per item (2.35% above that), 7% on athletic shoes at $150 or more, 12.35% on trading cards and 2.5% on heavy equipment. Starter pays the same rates as sellers without a Store.
- Promoted Listings General: you set an ad rate between 2% and 100% of the item's total sale amount, including shipping and tax. You are charged only when the promoted item sells within 30 days of a click on your ad. Promoted Listings Priority is billed per click and is not included in this calculator.
- International fee: 1.65% of the total amount of the sale when the buyer's delivery address or registered address is outside the US. Not charged when the item ships through eBay International Shipping.
- Listing and currency fees: 250 zero-insertion-fee listings a month without a Store, then $0.35 per listing. Payouts in a currency other than USD carry a 3% conversion charge, rising to 3.25% on October 14, 2026.
Ways to keep more of each eBay sale
- Price the shipping line carefully: eBay's 13.6% applies to shipping charged to the buyer and to sales tax, not just the item price. Charging $8 shipping costs you about $1.09 in fees on top of the label.
- Turn on eBay International Shipping instead of shipping abroad yourself. The 1.65% international fee is waived on those orders and eBay handles customs.
- A Basic Store ($21.95 a month on a yearly plan) cuts the most-categories rate from 13.6% to 12.7%. That 0.9-point saving covers the subscription once you sell roughly $2,440 a month; below that, stay on the free plan.
- In Promoted Listings General, set a fixed ad rate near the 2% minimum instead of accepting the suggested dynamic rate. You pay the rate on the whole sale, including shipping, every time a promoted item sells after a click.
- Sneakers that sell for $150 or more get an 8% rate with no per-order fee, so bundling or pricing a pair at $150 rather than $145 can lower the fee in dollars.
eBay fee FAQ
Does eBay charge fees on shipping?
Yes. The final value fee is calculated on the total amount of the sale, which includes the item price, shipping and handling charged to the buyer, and sales tax. Offering free shipping does not avoid the fee; it just moves the shipping cost into your item price.
When does eBay take its fee?
When the item sells. eBay deducts the final value fee, the per-order fee and any ad fee from the sale proceeds before the money is paid out to your bank account. Insertion fees, if any, are charged when you create the listing.
Does eBay charge a separate payment processing fee?
No. eBay processes payments itself and the cost is included in the final value fee. There is no PayPal-style 2.9% + $0.30 charge on top.
Is there a monthly fee to sell on eBay?
No. Without a Store you get 250 zero-insertion-fee listings a month and pay only when something sells. Store subscriptions from $4.95 a month are optional and mainly pay off for higher-volume sellers through lower final value fees and more free listings.
What is the per-order fee?
A fixed $0.30 on orders of $10 or less and $0.40 on orders over $10, charged once per order alongside the final value fee. It is not charged on athletic shoes that sell for $150 or more.
Do I pay eBay fees on sales tax?
Yes. Sales tax collected from the buyer is part of the total amount of the sale, so the final value fee percentage applies to it. This calculator leaves tax out, so your real fee will be slightly higher in states where tax is collected.
Do I get the fee back if the sale is canceled or refunded?
Often, yes. If you cancel the sale or refund the buyer in full, you may be eligible for a final value fee credit under eBay's fee credits policy. Ad fees and insertion fees are handled separately.
