Worked example
A $45 Home & Kitchen item with free shipping has a total sales price of $45. The referral fee is 15% of $45 = $6.75, well above the $0.30 minimum. On the Professional plan the $39.99 monthly fee spread over 100 items sold is $0.40 per item, and there is no per-item fee. Total fees are $7.15, so Amazon pays out $37.85. After the $15 unit cost and $5 to ship it, profit is $17.85.
How Amazon fees work
Amazon is the largest US online retailer, and roughly 60% of what it sells comes from third-party sellers: brands, private-label businesses, wholesalers, arbitrage sellers and individuals clearing out books and electronics. You can ship orders yourself (FBM) or send inventory to Amazon warehouses (FBA), which adds fulfillment fees on top of the selling fees below.
Every sale pays a referral fee, Amazon's commission. It is 15% in most categories, including Home & Kitchen, Toys & Games and Sports & Outdoors, but 8% for Consumer Electronics and Computers, 12% for Automotive, and tiered for Clothing (5% up to $15, 10% up to $20, then 17%), Beauty and Grocery (8% on low-priced items, 15% above $10 or $15). The percentage applies to the total sales price, meaning the item price plus any shipping and gift-wrap charges, with a $0.30 minimum per item in most categories.
You also choose a selling plan. The Individual plan has no monthly fee but charges $0.99 for each item sold; the Professional plan costs $39.99 a month with no per-item fee, so it wins once you sell more than about 40 items a month. Media items (books, DVDs, music, software, video) carry an extra $1.80 closing fee per item. FBA fulfillment, storage and advertising are separate and depend on size, weight and season.

- Categories with split rates not in this calculator: Jewelry 20% on the first $250 of the price and 5% above; Watches 16% on the first $1,500 and 3% above; Furniture 15% on the first $200 and 10% above; Electronics Accessories 15% on the first $100 and 8% above; Amazon Device Accessories 45%; full-size appliances 8%.
- Selling plan: Individual costs $0.99 per item sold and nothing monthly. Professional costs $39.99 a month with no per-item fee and unlocks bulk listing tools, advertising and restricted categories. The two plans pay the same referral fees.
- Media closing fee: $1.80 per item on books, DVDs, music, software and video, charged in addition to the 15% referral fee.

- Sales tax is collected and remitted by Amazon and is not part of the total sales price, so the referral fee is not charged on it.
Ways to keep more of each Amazon sale
- Switch to the Professional plan once you consistently sell more than 40 items a month: 41 × $0.99 = $40.59, already more than the $39.99 subscription.
- Check the referral rate before you source. The same $30 product pays $4.50 in Home & Kitchen (15%) but only $2.40 in Consumer Electronics (8%), and clothing priced at $20.00 pays 10% while $20.01 pays 17%.
- Charging shipping does not dodge the fee: the referral percentage applies to the shipping charge too. Build the shipping cost into the item price and compare with FBA fulfillment fees for your size tier.
- For used books and media, remember the $1.80 closing fee plus $0.99 on the Individual plan: a $12 book nets you about $7.41 before your own costs, so price low-value media accordingly or sell it in lots elsewhere.
- New sellers should look at Amazon's new-seller incentives (referral fee credits and bonuses on branded sales) before launching, since they can offset the first year of fees.
Amazon fee FAQ
Does Amazon charge a referral fee on shipping?
Yes. The referral fee is calculated on the total sales price, which Amazon defines as the item's list price plus shipping costs and any gift-wrapping charges. It is not charged on sales tax.
When does Amazon take its fees?
At the time of the sale. Referral fees, closing fees and the $0.99 Individual fee are deducted from the order proceeds in your seller account before Amazon disburses your balance, which for most sellers happens on a rolling 14-day settlement cycle.
Is there a monthly fee to sell on Amazon?
Only on the Professional plan, which costs $39.99 a month. The Individual plan has no monthly fee but charges $0.99 per item sold. Professional is cheaper once you sell more than about 40 items a month.
What is the minimum referral fee?
$0.30 per item in most categories. If 15% of your price comes to less than $0.30 (an item under $2), Amazon charges $0.30 instead. Media, grocery and video games have no minimum.
Do I pay a payment processing fee on Amazon?
No. There is no separate card-processing charge; payment handling is covered by the referral fee.
Are FBA fees included in this calculator?

Do I get the referral fee back on a refund?
