Worked example
An item sells for $40 with free shipping, so buyer-paid shipping is $0. Mercari's selling fee is 10% of $40 = $4.00, and there is no payment processing fee. The buyer separately pays a 3.6% Buyer Protection fee of $1.44, which does not affect your payout. You receive $36.00 by free direct deposit. After the $15 you paid for the item and the $6 shipping label you covered, profit is $15.00.
How Mercari fees work
Mercari is a US resale app for everyday secondhand goods: clothing, electronics, toys, collectibles, home items and beauty. Sellers are mostly individuals decluttering or flipping thrift finds, and the app handles listing, prepaid shipping labels and payouts. Everything is fixed price with offers, and both sides rate each other to complete the sale.
Mercari's fees changed twice in less than a year. In March 2024 it dropped the selling fee to zero and moved the cost onto buyers. Starting January 6, 2025 it reversed course: sellers now pay a flat 10% of the completed item price plus buyer-paid shipping, and there is no separate payment processing fee (the old 2.9% + $0.50 processing fee only lingers on listings that were never updated after that date). Buyers pay a 3.6% Buyer Protection fee, also calculated on the item price plus buyer-paid shipping, on top of the listed price.
Getting paid is free by direct deposit; Instant Pay to a debit card costs $3 per transfer, and a failed direct deposit costs $2. Sellers who cancel frequently can be charged 5% of the item price, up to $25. On a $40 free-shipping sale you keep $36, which makes Mercari one of the cheapest resale apps for the seller, with the buyer covering the rest.
- Selling fee: 10% of the combined item price and buyer-paid shipping, charged to the seller when the transaction completes. It applies to listings created or updated on or after January 6, 2025, which by now is nearly all of them.
- Payment processing: none for sellers or buyers under the current structure. Listings that were created before January 6, 2025 and never edited still use the legacy structure (a buyer-paid fee plus a 2.9% + $0.50 payment processing fee) until they are updated.
- Buyer Protection fee: 3.6% of the item price plus buyer-paid shipping, paid by the buyer at checkout in addition to the price. It does not reduce your payout, but buyers see it in the total, which affects what they are willing to offer.
- Payout fees: direct deposit to a bank account is free for completed transfers; a failed direct deposit costs a non-refundable $2. Instant Pay to a debit card costs $3 per transfer.
- Cancellation fee: if a seller cancels frequently, Mercari may charge 5% of the item price, up to $25 per cancellation, and may remove listings or limit the account.
- Shipping: if you choose a Mercari prepaid label and offer free shipping, the label cost is deducted from your earnings; if the buyer pays shipping, that amount is part of the 10% fee base.
Ways to keep more of each Mercari sale
- Buyer-paid shipping is inside the 10%, so a $9 shipping charge costs you $0.90 in fees and the buyer $0.32 more in their 3.6% fee. Compare with building the label cost into a free-shipping price.
- Price with the buyer's 3.6% in mind: a $40 listing shows the buyer $41.44 plus shipping and tax before they even make an offer. Offers tend to arrive lower to compensate.
- Skip Instant Pay unless you need the money today. Three $3 transfers a month is $108 a year; standard direct deposit is free.
- Edit any listing older than January 2025 you still have live. Untouched legacy listings keep the old buyer fee and 2.9% + $0.50 processing fee, which makes them look more expensive to buyers.
- Avoid cancellations. Repeated cancels can trigger a 5% fee (up to $25) and account limits, which is more than the selling fee on most items.
