How Venmo fees work
Venmo started as a way to split dinner, and for a lot of freelancers, market vendors and side hustlers it is still the easiest way to get paid. Venmo is owned by PayPal, and once money changes hands for a product or service, a seller fee applies.
If you set up a business profile, every payment of $1.00 or more that lands on it costs 1.9% + 10¢, deducted automatically before the money reaches your balance. Take a contactless payment in person with Tap to Pay on iPhone or Android and the rate is 2.29% + 9¢. If you keep using a personal profile and the customer marks the payment as being for goods and services, Venmo charges you 2.99% with no fixed fee.
Moving money to your bank is free with a standard transfer, which typically completes within one business day and can take up to three. An instant transfer to an eligible bank account or debit card costs 1.75% of the amount, with a 25¢ minimum and a $25 cap. There are no monthly fees for a business profile, and customers who pay a business profile with a credit card are exempt from Venmo's usual 3% credit-card fee.
- Business profile payments: 1.9% + 10¢ on every payment of $1.00 or more sent to your business profile through the app or your QR code. On $100 that is $2.00.
- Tap to Pay: 2.29% + 9¢ when you accept a contactless card or phone in person through Tap to Pay on iPhone or Android on a business profile.
- Goods and services on a personal profile: 2.99% (no fixed fee) when the sender identifies the payment as being for goods and services.
- Standard bank transfer: free. Funds typically arrive within one business day and can take up to three business days.
- Instant transfer: 1.75% of the amount, minimum 25¢, maximum $25. The cap means any transfer of about $1,429 or more costs a flat $25.
- Customers paying a business profile with a credit card do not pay Venmo's usual 3% credit-card sending fee; your seller fee is the only charge on the payment.
Ways to keep more of each Venmo sale
- Switch to a business profile if you sell regularly: 1.9% + 10¢ beats the 2.99% personal goods-and-services rate on anything over about $9.
- Use standard transfers. On a $500 payout, instant costs $8.75; waiting a business day costs nothing.
- Put a QR code at the register. A QR or username payment to your business profile (1.9% + 10¢) is cheaper than Tap to Pay (2.29% + 9¢) on anything over about $3.
- Let customers tag payments as goods and services. The tag is what triggers the fee, but it is also what gives them purchase protection and keeps your account in good standing.
- Batch your transfers. If you must use instant transfer, one $1,000 transfer costs $17.50; the $25 cap only helps above about $1,429.
