How Square fees work
Square is the go-to processor for coffee shops, salons, food trucks and market vendors, but it also runs online stores, invoices and payment links. On the free plan there is no monthly fee; you pay a flat rate per payment that depends on how the card reaches Square.
Tap, dip or swipe a card in person and Square charges 2.6% + 15¢. Card payments made online or through an invoice cost 3.3% + 30¢ on the free plan. Payments processed through Square's developer APIs inside your own app are 2.9% + 30¢. The most expensive way to get paid is manual entry or a card on file at 3.5% + 15¢. Afterpay costs 6% + 30¢, and ACH bank payments on invoices are 1% with a $1 minimum. Cards issued outside the US carry an extra 1.5% on every plan.
Square Plus ($49 a month per location) drops in-person to 2.5% + 15¢ and online to 2.9% + 30¢; Square Premium ($149 a month per location) goes to 2.4% + 15¢ in person. This calculator uses the free-plan rates, which is what most small sellers are on.
- In person (tap, dip or swipe): 2.6% + 15¢ per payment on the free plan. A $100 sale costs $2.75.

Ways to keep more of each Square sale
- Get the card in front of a reader whenever possible. In person is 2.6% + 15¢; keying the same card in is 3.5% + 15¢, nearly a full point more.
- Offer ACH on large invoices. A $2,000 invoice costs $20 by ACH versus $66.30 by card on the free plan.
- If you process a lot online, run the numbers on Square Plus: the drop from 3.3% to 2.9% on online payments covers the $49 monthly fee at about $12,250 a month in online volume.
- Building your own checkout? Payments through Square's APIs are 2.9% + 30¢ instead of 3.3% + 30¢.
- Be careful with Afterpay at 6% + 30¢. It can make sense on bigger baskets, but on a $40 order it takes $2.70.
