How PayPal Zettle fees work
PayPal Zettle, now sold as PayPal Point of Sale, is PayPal's answer to Square: a $29 card reader or a $199 terminal, a free POS app, and payments that settle into your PayPal business account. It suits market vendors, salons, cafés and anyone who already gets paid through PayPal online and wants the same account for in-person sales.
The in-person rate is 2.29% + 9¢ per transaction for cards that are tapped, dipped or swiped on the reader, and the same 2.29% + 9¢ when a customer scans your QR code and pays with PayPal or Venmo. Keying a card number in by hand costs 3.49% + 9¢. Invoices sent from the app are charged at PayPal's online rates: 3.49% + 49¢ if the customer pays with PayPal or Venmo, or 2.99% + 49¢ if they pay by card.
There are no monthly fees, setup fees or contracts. Compared with Square's free-plan rate of 2.6% + 15¢, Zettle's 2.29% + 9¢ saves 37¢ on a $100 sale and 9¢ on a $10 sale, which adds up for a busy counter. The trade-off is that your money lives in a PayPal account rather than going straight to a bank.
- Card present (tap, dip or swipe on the reader or terminal): 2.29% + 9¢ per transaction. On $100 that is $2.38.
- QR code payments (the customer scans your code and pays with PayPal or Venmo): 2.29% + 9¢.
- Manual card entry (typing the card number in): 3.49% + 9¢.
- Invoices paid with PayPal or Venmo: 3.49% + 49¢. Invoices paid by card or other methods: 2.99% + 49¢.
- Hardware: $29 for your first card reader as a new business user (one per user), $79 for additional readers; the terminal is $199, or $239 with a built-in barcode scanner.
- No monthly or setup fees.
Ways to keep more of each PayPal Zettle sale
- Put a QR code at the counter. It costs the same 2.29% + 9¢ as a card tap and lets customers pay from a PayPal or Venmo balance.
- Never key cards in when the customer is standing there. Manual entry is 3.49% versus 2.29% on the reader, $1.20 more on a $100 sale.
- For invoices, ask clients to pay by card rather than PayPal balance: 2.99% + 49¢ beats 3.49% + 49¢, a 50¢ saving on $100.
- If most of your tickets are small, Zettle's 9¢ fixed fee beats Square's 15¢ and SumUp's 10¢. On a $10 sale Zettle costs 32¢, SumUp 36¢ and Square 41¢.
