Worked example
A $100 online payment with a US card costs 2.9% ($2.90) plus 30¢, so Stripe takes $3.20 and pays out $96.80. After the $40 the product cost you, profit is $56.80.
How Stripe fees work
Stripe is the payment processor behind a large share of online checkouts, subscription apps and marketplaces. If you sell through your own website, take card payments in an app, bill clients with Stripe Invoicing or run a Stripe Terminal reader at the counter, Stripe takes a cut of every successful payment. There is no monthly fee and no setup fee on standard pricing; you pay only when you get paid.
The headline rate for a US business is 2.9% + 30¢ per successful online card payment with a domestic card. In-person payments through Stripe Terminal cost 2.7% + 5¢. Two surcharges stack on top of the card rate: an extra 0.5% when you type a card number in manually, and an extra 1.5% when the card was issued outside the United States. If Stripe has to convert the payment into US dollars, add another 1%.
ACH Direct Debit is the cheap option for large invoices: 0.8% of the amount, capped at $5.00. On a $2,000 invoice that is $5 instead of $58.30 by card. This calculator applies Stripe's published pay-as-you-go rates; if you negotiate custom pricing with Stripe, your numbers will differ.
- Online card payments: 2.9% + 30¢ per successful transaction with a US-issued card. A $100 payment costs $3.20.
- In person with Stripe Terminal: 2.7% + 5¢ per successful transaction. A $100 tap or dip costs $2.75.
- Manually entered cards: an extra 0.5% on top of the online rate, so 3.4% + 30¢ in total when you key a card number into the Dashboard or a virtual terminal.
- International cards: an extra 1.5% whenever the card was issued outside the US. Stripe lists this for both online and Terminal payments.
- Currency conversion: an extra 1% when Stripe converts the payment into your settlement currency.
- ACH Direct Debit: 0.8% of the payment, capped at $5.00. The cap kicks in at $625, so anything larger costs a flat $5.
- Disputes: $15.00 for each dispute you receive, and another $15.00 if you counter it manually. Instant Payouts cost 1.5% of the payout with a 50¢ minimum; standard payouts are free.
Ways to keep more of each Stripe sale
- Offer ACH Direct Debit on invoices over a few hundred dollars. A $1,000 invoice costs $5 by ACH versus $29.30 by card.
- Avoid keying card numbers by hand. Send a Stripe payment link or invoice instead and you skip the 0.5% manual-entry surcharge.
- Price and settle in USD when you can. Letting Stripe convert currency adds 1% on top of the 1.5% international-card fee, so a foreign order can cost 5.4% + 30¢.
- Use Stripe Terminal for walk-in customers. 2.7% + 5¢ beats the online rate on every ticket, and the gap is widest on small amounts.
- Turn on Link for returning customers. Link card payments cost the same 2.9% + 30¢, and Link instant bank payments are 2.6% + 30¢.
