Worked example

Sale
$20.00
Fees
$12.60
You keep
$7.40

A student pays $20 for your course on the Udemy website without using your coupon or referral link. The net amount is $20, Udemy keeps 63% = $12.60, and you receive 37% = $7.40. Had the student used your coupon or referral link, Udemy would keep 3% = $0.60 and you would receive $19.40.

How Udemy fees work

Udemy is a marketplace for online video courses. Instructors publish courses, Udemy hosts them, runs checkout and brings in students through its own marketplace and promotions, and the two split each sale. Udemy says there is no fee to be an instructor; instructors are paid according to a revenue share model.

The split depends on who brought the student. When a student buys using your instructor coupon or course referral link, you receive 97% of the revenue. On any other Udemy sale, where no instructor coupon or referral link was used, you receive 37% and Udemy keeps 63%. Both percentages apply to the net amount: what the student paid less any applicable taxes or fees, such as the 30% fee Apple or Google imposes on purchases made in the iOS and Android apps.

On a $20 web purchase that means $19.40 to you through your own coupon, or $7.40 when Udemy made the sale. If the same $20 is paid inside the mobile app, the store fee removes $6.00 first and your 37% of the remaining $14.00 is $5.18.

Courses can also earn from subscriptions. For Udemy Business, Udemy sets aside 15% of monthly subscription revenue as an instructor pool and divides it by each instructor's share of the minutes consumed. That income depends on watch time rather than price, so this calculator covers individual course purchases only.

Good to know

Revenue shares are from Udemy's instructor revenue share help article, read 2026-09-30. Udemy's full definition of net amount is in its Instructor Terms, which could not be read for this page; the calculator models the one deduction the help article puts a number on, the 30% Apple or Google fee on in-app purchases, and expects the price before tax. Each fee line is rounded to the cent, so an in-app result can differ from Udemy's own figure by a cent. Subscription and Udemy Business earnings depend on minutes consumed and are not modeled. Refunds, currency conversion and any charges from your payout provider are not modeled.
