Worked example
A $100 course sold on the Starter plan (billed annually at $29 a month) to a US card pays a 7.5% transaction fee of $7.50 and processing of 2.9% + 30¢, which is $3.20. Spread over 20 sales a month, the $29 plan adds $1.45 per sale. Total cost per sale is $12.15 and the creator keeps $87.85. On Builder the transaction fee disappears but the plan is $69, so at 20 sales a month the same sale nets $93.35.
How Teachable fees work
Teachable is a hosted platform for selling online courses, coaching and digital downloads. You build the course pages, Teachable handles checkout, hosting, student accounts and payouts, and you pay a monthly plan plus per-sale fees.
There is no free plan: Teachable's pricing page says it is a paid service with a 7-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Three plans are listed. Starter is $39 a month, or $29 a month billed annually, and takes a 7.5% transaction fee on every sale. Builder is $89 a month ($69 annually) and Growth is $189 a month ($139 annually); both have a 0% transaction fee when you use teachable:pay or the Monthly Payment Gateway. A Custom plan is priced by sales. Annual billing is about 22% cheaper than monthly.
On top of the plan, every sale pays payment processing at Teachable's standard rates: 2.9% + 30¢ for US credit and debit cards, 3.9% + 30¢ for international cards, 3.49% + 49¢ for US PayPal and 4.99% + 49¢ for international PayPal, plus a $15 fee per chargeback. Ways to keep more of each Teachable sale
- Move from Starter to Builder once you sell about $533 a month on annual billing: 7.5% of $533 is $40, the price difference between the two plans.
- Pay annually if you expect to sell for a year. Starter drops from $39 to $29 a month, saving $120, and the transaction fee is unchanged.
- Steer students to card checkout where you can; PayPal costs 3.49% + 49¢ versus 2.9% + 30¢ on US cards, 78¢ more on a $100 sale.
- Price to cover the flat parts. On a $20 product the 30¢ processing and the amortized plan price are a bigger share than on a $200 course.
- Use the sales-per-month field honestly; a $139 Growth plan at 5 sales a month costs $27.80 per sale, more than the 7.5% Starter fee on most course prices.
