Worked example
A $5 monthly pledge on the standard plan pays Patreon 10% ($0.50) plus processing of 2.9% of $5 ($0.145) + $0.30 = $0.445, which rounds to $0.45. Total fees are $0.95, so $4.05 lands in your balance; with no cost per member, profit is $4.05.
How Patreon fees work
Patreon is a membership platform: fans pay a monthly (or per-post) amount for access to your posts, community, and perks, and Patreon bills them, delivers the content, and pays you. It is used by podcasters, YouTubers, musicians, writers, artists, and anyone with an audience willing to pay a few dollars a month.
Patreon's fee has two layers. The platform fee is 10% of the income you earn if you published your creator page after August 4, 2025. Creators who launched before that date keep their legacy rate as long as the page stays published: Pro at 8%, Pro + Merch at 11%, or Founders at 5% for pages from before May 7, 2019 that never changed plan. Unpublishing a legacy page moves it to the standard 10%.
The second layer is payment processing. On the standard plan it is 2.9% + $0.30 per payment for cards, Apple Pay, and US PayPal or Venmo (3.9% + $0.30 for PayPal or Venmo from outside the US). Legacy plans pay 5% + $0.10 on tiers priced at $3 or less and 2.9% + $0.30 above that. A 2.5% currency conversion fee applies when a member pays in a currency other than your payout currency.
A $5 pledge on the standard plan nets $4.05: $0.50 platform fee and $0.45 processing. Payout fees (25 cents for US direct deposit) come out when you withdraw, not per pledge.

- Payment processing, legacy plans: tiers priced at $3 or less use micropayment rates of 5% + $0.10 per payment (6% + $0.10 for non-US PayPal/Venmo). Tiers above $3 pay 2.9% + $0.30.
- Currency conversion: 2.5% of any payment made in a currency different from your payout currency. A US creator paid in USD owes this only on members who pay in another currency.
- Payout fees, charged per withdrawal rather than per pledge: $0.25 per payout by US direct deposit; 1% for PayPal (minimum $0.25, capped at $20); $1.00 per payout to Payoneer.
- One-time purchases (digital products, commissions) carry the same platform and processing fees as memberships. Memberships bought inside the iOS app through Apple's in-app purchase system carry Apple's 30% App Store fee.
- Your balance already reflects the platform fee, processing fees, and currency conversion. Sales tax and VAT that Patreon adds at checkout are paid by the member and are not part of your fee base.
Ways to keep more of each Patreon sale
- Keep a legacy page published. A Pro creator pays 8% instead of 10%; on $2,000 a month that is $40 saved every month, and unpublishing the page forfeits the rate for good.
- On legacy plans, price tiers above $3. A $3 tier pays 5% + $0.10 in processing ($0.25); a $4 tier pays 2.9% + $0.30 ($0.42) but brings in a dollar more. On the standard plan there is no micropayment rate, so a $1 tier still costs $0.30 + 2.9% plus the 10% fee.
- Offer annual memberships. One yearly payment carries one $0.30 fixed processing charge instead of twelve, which matters most on $3 to $5 tiers.
- Choose direct deposit for payouts. It costs $0.25 per payout versus 1% (up to $20) for PayPal; on a $1,500 payout that is $0.25 versus $15.
- Point iOS members to your Patreon page in a browser. Memberships purchased through Apple in-app purchase carry Apple's 30% App Store fee on top of Patreon's.
