Worked example
A pair of sneakers sells for $180 to a Level 1 seller. The transaction fee is 9% of $180 = $16.20 (above the $5 minimum) and payment processing is 3% of $180 = $5.40, so fees total $21.60. The payout is $180.00 − $21.60 = $158.40. After the $120 the seller paid at retail, profit is $38.40. The buyer pays shipping separately.
How StockX fees work
StockX is a bid/ask marketplace for sneakers, streetwear, trading cards, collectibles, and electronics. Sellers list an Ask or accept a Bid, ship the item to StockX for verification, and StockX forwards it to the buyer. Sellers range from people flipping a single retail pair to high-volume resellers moving hundreds of pairs a quarter.
Two fees come out of every Verified Marketplace sale. The transaction fee depends on your seller level: 9% at Level 1, 8.5% at Level 2, 8% at Level 3, 7.5% at Level 4, and 7% at Level 5, with a $5.00 minimum for US sellers. Levels are earned by quarterly volume: Level 2 needs 12 sales or $1,500, Level 3 needs 40 sales or $5,000, Level 4 needs 200 sales or $25,000, and Level 5 needs 800 sales or $100,000. Once you reach a level, you keep it through the current quarter and the following one.
The second fee is 3% payment processing, charged at every level. Both fees are calculated on the final sale price. Shipping is paid by the buyer and sales tax is handled by StockX, so neither changes your payout.
On a $180 pair at Level 1, fees are $16.20 plus $5.40, and you receive $158.40. The same sale at Level 5 pays $162.00. StockX's newer Listings Marketplace and StockX Live charged sellers no standard selling or processing fees at launch, with buyers covering those costs instead.
- Transaction fee: a percentage of the final sale price set by your seller level. Level 1 is 9%, Level 2 is 8.5%, Level 3 is 8%, Level 4 is 7.5%, Level 5 is 7%.
- Minimum transaction fee: $5.00 for US sellers. It only matters on cheap items: below about $56 at Level 1, the $5 minimum is more than 9%.
- Payment processing fee: 3% of the final sale price, charged on every Verified Marketplace sale regardless of level.
- Seller levels: earned on a calendar-quarter basis by either sales count or dollar volume (Level 2: 12 sales or $1,500; Level 3: 40 or $5,000; Level 4: 200 or $25,000; Level 5: 800 or $100,000). A level you reach applies for the rest of that quarter and the next one.
- Shipping and tax: the buyer pays shipping and any sales tax at checkout; they are not part of your fee base. You ship the item to a StockX verification center.
- Listings Marketplace and StockX Live: at launch, StockX charged sellers no standard selling or processing fees on these formats; the buyer covers the processing fee and shipping. Penalty and return-related fees can still apply.
Ways to keep more of each StockX sale
- Chase the next level near quarter end. Going from Level 1 to Level 2 saves 0.5% on every sale for the rest of that quarter and all of the next; on $5,000 of quarterly sales that is $25.
- Watch the $5 minimum on low-value items. A $30 sale pays a $5.00 transaction fee (16.7%) plus $0.90 processing, so cheap accessories and cards lose a large share to fees.
- Price Asks with the full 12% in mind at Level 1. To clear a $30 profit on a $120 retail pair, your Ask needs to be $170.45 or higher.
- Compare with GOAT before you list. GOAT's 9.5% commission plus a $5 mailing fee and 2.9% cash-out fee often comes out close to StockX's 12%, but the ranking flips as your StockX level rises.
- Sell to existing Bids when the spread is small. The fee percentage is the same either way, and selling now avoids the risk of the market dropping while your Ask sits.
