Worked example

Sale
$60.00
Fees
$1.79
You keep
$58.21

A customer taps a card for a $60 sale at a shop on the Basic plan that makes 300 in-person sales a month. The Shopify Payments in-person fee is 2.6% of $60 = $1.56 plus 10¢, or $1.66. The $39 monthly subscription spread over 300 sales adds $0.13. Total fees are $1.79, so you keep $58.21; after $25 of cost of goods, profit is $33.21. If the same card were typed in by hand, the fee would be 3.5% + 10¢, or $2.20.

How Shopify POS fees work

Shopify POS is the point-of-sale app that comes with a Shopify store. Retailers use it at the counter, at markets and at pop-ups, with a Shopify card reader or Tap to Pay on a phone, and every sale lands in the same inventory, orders and customer records as the online store.

The cost has three parts. First is the card fee: with Shopify Payments, cards that are tapped, inserted or swiped cost 2.6% + 10¢ on the Basic plan, 2.5% + 10¢ on Grow and 2.4% + 10¢ on Advanced (Plus is 2.3% + 10¢). In-person rates are lower than Shopify's online rates of 2.9%, 2.7% and 2.5% + 30¢ because a card that is physically present is lower risk. Typing a card number in by hand is the exception: manually entered cards cost 3.5% + 10¢, since Shopify treats them as card-not-present even when the customer is in your store.

Second is the plan itself: $39 a month for Basic, $105 for Grow or $399 for Advanced when billed monthly ($29, $79 or $299 billed yearly). In-person selling features are included with every paid plan at no extra cost.

Third, and optional, is POS Pro at $89 a month per location, which adds advanced staff, inventory and customer tools for busy stores. Shopify states there are no setup fees and no hidden fees beyond the card rate and subscription.

Shopify POS fee FAQ

What are Shopify POS transaction fees?

With Shopify Payments, in-person card payments cost 2.6% + 10¢ on Basic, 2.5% + 10¢ on Grow and 2.4% + 10¢ on Advanced. Manually entered cards cost 3.5% + 10¢. There is no separate Shopify transaction fee on top when you use Shopify Payments.

Is Shopify POS free?

The in-person selling features are included with every paid Shopify plan at no extra cost, so you pay only the plan subscription and card fees. POS Pro, with advanced staff, inventory and customer tools, is an optional add-on at $89 a month per location.

How much is Shopify POS Pro?

$89 a month for each POS Pro location on the Basic, Grow and Advanced plans. Shopify Plus includes the first 20 POS Pro locations, and up to 200 when Shopify Payments is the primary payment provider.

Why are manually entered cards more expensive on Shopify POS?

Shopify treats a typed-in card as a card-not-present transaction, even when the customer is in your store, because the fraud risk is higher. The rate is 3.5% + 10¢ on Basic, Grow and Advanced instead of 2.4% to 2.6% + 10¢.

Are Shopify's in-person rates lower than its online rates?

Yes. In person is 2.6%, 2.5% or 2.4% + 10¢ by plan; online is 2.9%, 2.7% or 2.5% + 30¢. On a $60 sale on Basic that is $1.66 in person compared with $2.04 online.

What does Shopify take from a $100 in-person sale?

$2.70 on Basic (2.6% + 10¢), $2.60 on Grow and $2.50 on Advanced when the card is tapped, inserted or swiped. A manually entered card costs $3.60.

Do I need special hardware for Shopify POS?

Shopify says you need a smartphone or tablet and a Shopify card reader to start. Tap to Pay on iPhone accepts contactless payments with no additional hardware, and Tap to Pay on Android does the same on a compatible Android device.

Good to know

Rates are from Shopify's US pricing and POS pricing pages, read 2026-10-04; the pages show no effective date. The calculator assumes Shopify Payments. If you take cards on a third-party terminal instead, your provider's rates apply, and Shopify's pricing page says third-party transaction fees (2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced) may apply when you use a third-party payment provider; whether they apply to in-person orders was not confirmed on the pages read and is not modeled. Subscription uses the monthly-billing price; yearly billing is cheaper. The POS pricing page describes POS Pro's $89 a month as billed yearly, and the pages read do not state a separate month-to-month price. Shopify Plus (2.3% + 10¢ in person) and the Retail plan mentioned in the help center are not modeled. Premium, commercial and international cards may be charged above the base rate; the in-person surcharge is not published on the pricing page. Card reader and other hardware costs are not included. For online store fees, see the Shopify calculator.
