Worked example
You sell a t-shirt for $28.00 and charge the customer $4.95 for shipping, so you collect $32.95. Say Printful bills you $13.00 for the shirt (an example figure; use the price in your own catalog) and $4.95 for shipping, its flat US rate for one shirt. A printed inside label adds $0.99. You are on the Growth plan at $24.99 a month and sell 50 orders a month, which adds $0.50 per order. Extras total $1.49. After the $13.00 product price and $4.95 shipping, profit is $13.51. On the Free plan with no label the same sale makes $15.00. Fees charged by the store or marketplace where you take the payment are not included.
How Printful fees work
Printful is a print-on-demand fulfillment company. You connect it to a store on Shopify, Etsy or another platform, a customer orders, and Printful prints, packs and ships the item under your brand. Sellers are mostly small apparel and merchandise brands, artists and creators who do not want to hold stock.
Printful does not take a commission on your sales. Its Help Center says it is free to start, with no setup fees, no order minimums and no monthly subscription on the free plan; you only pay when an order is placed. Each order is billed at the product price, which covers the blank product, one print or embroidery placement and fulfillment, plus shipping and any tax. Your customer pays you through your own store, and Printful then charges your card, PayPal or Printful Wallet for the order.
The optional costs are branding and the Growth plan. A printed inside label is $0.99 and an outside label $2.49. Growth costs $24.99 a month, takes up to 33% off product prices and 9% off branding, and is free for a year once your yearly sales reach $12,000.
So your profit is the retail price and shipping you charge, less Printful's product price, shipping and extras, and less whatever your store platform and payment processor take.
- Product price: Printful's base price for each item includes the blank product, one print or embroidery design placement and fulfillment. Prices vary by product and are listed in the Printful catalog; extra placements, large prints and other customization cost more.
- Shipping: Printful charges fixed Standard shipping rates by product category. To US addresses a single shirt is $4.95 and each additional shirt in the order is $2.20; a hoodie or sweatshirt is $8.79 and $2.50; an 11 oz mug is $6.69 and $3.50.
- Taxes: Printful adds tax to an order where it applies. The amount depends on the product, where it ships from and where it ships to.
- Custom labels: a printed inside apparel label costs $0.99 per label and a printed outside label $2.49 per label.
- Embroidery and premium images: a new embroidery design carries a one-time digitization fee of $2.95 to $6.50, and each additional embroidery placement is $2.95. Premium images cost $1 per image, placement and item sold.
- Growth membership: $24.99 a month, sold only as a 30-day subscription that you can cancel anytime. It gives up to 33% off product prices (the discount varies by product), 9% off branding and 25% off sample orders. Once your yearly sales reach $12,000 you get Growth free for 12 months.
- No commission: Printful takes no percentage of your sale and has no setup fee or order minimum. The store or marketplace where you sell charges its own fees separately.
Ways to keep more of each Printful sale
- Run the Growth math before you subscribe. At $24.99 a month it pays for itself once your monthly product discounts pass that amount; if Growth saves you $1.00 an item, that is 25 items a month.
- Charge shipping that matches what Printful charges you. A second shirt in the same order adds only $2.20 to Printful's shipping, so flat per-item shipping in your store can over- or under-collect.
- Add your storefront's fees before you set a price. Printful's bill is only part of the cost; a sale through Etsy or Shopify also pays that platform's transaction and payment fees.
- Save labels for products where branding matters. A $0.99 inside label on a $28 shirt is about 3.5% of the retail price; a $2.49 outside label is almost 9%.
- Track your yearly sales. Printful counts them after discounts, shipping, taxes and additional fees, and reaching $12,000 gives you Growth free for a year.
