Sale
$10,000.00
Fees
$860.00
You keep
$9,140.00

A project that ends at $10,000 from 200 backers pays Kickstarter's 5% fee, $500.00, plus payment processing of 3% of $10,000 ($300.00) and $0.30 on each of the 200 pledges ($60.00), so $360.00. Total fees are $860.00 and the creator receives $9,140.00 before the cost of making and shipping rewards. Had the project missed its goal, no fees would be charged and no money collected.

How Kickstarter fees work

Kickstarter is the best-known rewards crowdfunding platform in the United States, used for board games, gadgets, books, films and other creative projects. Funding is all-or-nothing: backers pledge during the campaign, and their cards are charged only if the project reaches its goal by the deadline.

Fees follow the same rule. If the project is funded, Kickstarter deducts its 5% fee from the total funds raised, and the payment processor takes 3% plus $0.30 per pledge. Pledges under $10 get a discounted micropledge rate of 5% plus $0.08 per pledge. Kickstarter's own summary is that the total cost is its 5% fee plus payment processing of between 3% and 5%. If funding is not successful, there are no fees at all.

The per-pledge part means the backer count matters, not just the total. A $10,000 project from 200 backers pays $860 in fees (8.6%); the same $10,000 from 1,000 backers pays $1,100 (11%). There is no fee to create or launch a project, and Kickstarter takes its fees out of the collected funds before transferring them, so you never pay an invoice.

$500 for the 5% fee plus $300 in processing plus $0.30 per pledge; with 200 backers that is $860 total, leaving $9,140.

Is the Kickstarter fee per pledge or per project?

Good to know

Fees are from Kickstarter's US fee page, read 2026-09-29. The page now lists processing at 3% + $0.30 per pledge and 5% + $0.08 for micropledges; many older guides still cite $0.20 and $0.05, and Kickstarter's page gives no date for the change. The micropledge select applies one rate to all pledges; a real campaign mixing sizes falls between the two. Fees differ for projects based outside the US. Payout timing is not modeled; see Kickstarter's funding handbook.
