Worked example
A $100 donation to a personal fundraiser is charged the transaction fee of 2.9% ($2.90) plus $0.30, so $3.20 in total. The fundraiser receives $96.80. There is no platform fee. The same $100 given to a certified nonprofit's fundraiser would be charged $2.50 and net $97.50.
How GoFundMe fees work
GoFundMe is the largest personal crowdfunding platform in the United States, used for medical bills, emergencies, memorials, community projects and charity drives. Unlike rewards crowdfunding, there is no goal to hit: you can withdraw what has been raised at any time.
The fee stack is short. GoFundMe says there is no fee to start or manage a fundraiser, so the 0% platform fee is real. What you pay is a transaction fee on each donation: 2.9% plus $0.30 for fundraisers run by individuals and businesses, or 2.2% plus $0.30 when the money goes to a certified nonprofit. The fee is deducted automatically from each donation, so a $100 gift arrives as $96.80.

- If the beneficiary is a certified nonprofit, run a charity fundraiser: the rate drops from 2.9% to 2.2%, saving $0.70 per $100.
- Set your goal about 3.3% above what you actually need so the transaction fees are covered; the calculator's target field does this for a single donation.
- Tell donors the tip to GoFundMe is optional and separate from their gift, so it does not confuse people who think it comes out of your total.
