How Amazon Pay fees work
Amazon Pay lets shoppers check out on your own website using the address and card already saved in their Amazon account. It is popular with Shopify, BigCommerce and Magento stores that want a one-click option for the millions of people who already trust Amazon with their payment details. You are not selling on Amazon's marketplace; you are using Amazon as the payment processor on your site.
The fee has two parts. A processing fee of 2.9% of the transaction applies when the shopper's payment method was issued in the US, or 3.9% when it was issued outside the US (a cross-border transaction). On top of that, Amazon charges a $0.30 authorization fee per transaction, collected when the payment is processed or when the authorization closes or expires.
The processing fee comes back to you when you refund a customer, but the 30¢ authorization fee does not. Disputed chargebacks that are not covered by Amazon's Payment Protection Policy cost $20.00 plus tax where applicable. There are no monthly, setup or minimum fees. If you use Amazon Pay through Shopify Payments, Shopify's own fee schedule applies and there is no extra third-party transaction fee.
- Domestic processing fee: 2.9% of the transaction when the payment method was issued in the US. On $100 that is $2.90.
- Cross-border processing fee: 3.9% when the payment method was issued outside the US. On $100 that is $3.90.
- Authorization fee: $0.30 per transaction, charged on every successful payment and also when an authorization closes or expires without being captured. It is non-refundable.
- Refunds: the 2.9% or 3.9% processing fee is returned to you when you refund, but the $0.30 authorization fee is kept.
- Chargebacks: $20.00 plus tax where applicable for disputed chargebacks not covered by the Payment Protection Policy. Non-refundable.
- No monthly, setup or minimum fees. Through Shopify Payments there are no additional third-party transaction fees; Shopify's own schedule applies.
Ways to keep more of each Amazon Pay sale
- Treat Amazon Pay as an extra checkout button, not your only processor. Its 2.9% + 30¢ matches Stripe's online rate, so it costs nothing extra to offer both.
- Watch cross-border orders. A foreign-issued payment method adds a full point (3.9%), so on a $200 order that is $2 more than a US card.
- Capture or void authorizations promptly. The 30¢ authorization fee is charged even when an authorization expires without capture.
- Ship to the address Amazon provides and keep tracking. Chargebacks outside the Payment Protection Policy cost $20 each.
- On Shopify, use Amazon Pay through Shopify Payments to avoid third-party transaction fees.
