Worked example
A $40 handmade item with free shipping has a total sales price of $40. The referral fee is 15% of $40 = $6.00, well above the $0.30 minimum, and past the first month there is no plan fee, so Amazon pays out $34.00. After $10 of materials and $5 of postage, profit is $19.00. In your first month, with 20 orders, the one-time $39.99 plan fee would add $2.00 to each order.
How Amazon Handmade fees work
Amazon Handmade is the part of Amazon reserved for makers. Approved artisans and collaborative groups such as cooperatives, nonprofits and charities list handcrafted goods alongside the rest of Amazon's catalog, and Amazon uses an application process to keep the category to genuine handmade work. Products qualify if they are handcrafted, hand-designed, hand-altered, repurposed or upcycled, and the category covers jewelry, artwork, clothing, home goods, kitchen items, stationery, toys, pet supplies and more.
The fee stack is short. For every unit shipped, Handmade deducts a referral fee of 15% or $0.30, whichever is greater. On Amazon a referral fee is a percentage of the total sales price, which Amazon defines as the list price plus shipping costs and any gift-wrapping charges, so shipping you charge the buyer is part of the fee basis.
Handmade sellers register on Amazon's Professional selling plan, which normally costs $39.99 a month plus selling fees. Approved makers pay it once: following a one-time, first-month payment, the ongoing monthly fee is waived, which Amazon describes as a savings of $480 per year. The calculator's first-month switch spreads that single $39.99 across the orders you expect in month one, so you can see what your first sales really cost and what every sale costs after that.

- Customization: you can offer personalized or made-to-order products by registering for Amazon Custom. Custom products must be fulfilled by the seller and can't be fulfilled through Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA).
- Compared with standard Amazon categories: regular sellers pay 20% on the first $250 of a jewelry sale and 17% on clothing over $20, plus $39.99 every month on the Professional plan or $0.99 per item on the Individual plan. Handmade is a flat 15% with the monthly fee waived after month one.
Ways to keep more of each Amazon Handmade sale
- Treat shipping as part of the price. The 15% applies to the shipping charge as well, so moving $6 from the item price into a shipping charge saves nothing in fees.
- Budget for the first month. The one-time $39.99 plan payment is a real cost: with 10 orders in month one it adds $4.00 to each. Turn on the first-month switch in the calculator to see it.
- Keep small items at $2.00 or more where you can. 15% of $2.00 is exactly $0.30, so below that price the $0.30 minimum takes a bigger share of the sale.
- Price personalized work for your own fulfillment. Custom products can't go through FBA, so put your real postage and packaging in the shipping cost field.
- Use the target-profit field to price from your materials cost up. A $10 item with $5 postage and free shipping needs a $41.18 price to clear $20 after the 15% fee.
