How Upwork fees work
Upwork is the largest general freelance marketplace in the US. Clients post jobs, freelancers send proposals (paid for with Connects), and work runs as hourly contracts billed weekly or fixed-price contracts paid by milestone. Developers, designers, writers, marketers, virtual assistants, and consultants all work there.
The cost of working on Upwork is the Freelancer Service Fee. In 2026 it is no longer a single flat rate: Upwork's help center says the fee ranges from 0% to 15% per contract. You see the exact percentage when a client sends an offer or when you submit a proposal, and once the contract begins the rate is fixed and will not change. Upwork's own worked example uses 10%: bill $22.22 an hour to take home $20.
The fee applies to all earnings, including bonuses, on both hourly and fixed-price work. There are exceptions: Any Hire contracts carry no service fee, Upwork Payroll contracts are excluded, Direct Contracts with a client you brought to Upwork carry a reduced fee (0% for Freelancer Plus members), and Enterprise clients can have their own arrangement.
Getting the money out is cheap for US freelancers. Direct to U.S. Bank (ACH) withdrawals are free with a US tax address; Instant Pay costs $2.00 and a USD wire $50.00 per transfer. Hourly earnings become available ten days after the weekly billing period ends, and fixed-price milestones five days after the client approves them.
- Freelancer Service Fee: 0% to 15% per contract, charged on all your earnings on that contract, including bonuses. The percentage is shown on the offer or proposal before you accept and is fixed for the life of the contract. Upwork rounds the fee down to the nearest cent.
- Exceptions: no service fee on Any Hire contracts; Upwork Payroll contracts are excluded; Direct Contracts with a client you brought to Upwork carry a reduced fee, and Freelancer Plus members pay 0% on them; Enterprise clients may have a different arrangement.
- Refunds: if your client is refunded, by you or through payment protection, Upwork returns the Freelancer Service Fee you paid on that amount.
- Withdrawal fees, per transfer: Direct to U.S. Bank (ACH) is free for freelancers with a US tax address (a $2.99 fee applies to non-US freelancers starting September 1, 2026); Instant Pay $2.00; USD wire $50.00; Direct to Local Bank outside the US $0.99. Upwork charges a small per-transfer fee for PayPal that it shows in your Withdrawals settings.
- Security period: hourly earnings are available ten days after the weekly billing period (the following Wednesday); fixed-price milestones and Project Catalog funds release five days after the client approves; bonuses five days after the client's payment processes.
- Costs to win work: Connects cost $0.15 each and the number needed varies per job; boosting a proposal bids extra Connects. Freelancer Plus includes 100 Connects a month. Clients, not freelancers, pay the one-time Contract Initiation Fee of $0.99 to $14.99.
Ways to keep more of each Upwork sale
- Read the fee on every proposal. Because the rate now varies by contract from 0% to 15%, two similar jobs can cost you very different amounts; the percentage is shown before you submit.
- Price backward from take-home. For $20 an hour in hand at a 10% fee, bill $22.22; at 15%, bill $23.53 (divide your target by 1 minus the fee).
- Bring your own clients through Direct Contracts. The service fee is reduced, and Freelancer Plus members pay 0% on those contracts.
- Withdraw by ACH. It is free for US freelancers, while Instant Pay costs $2 per transfer and a wire $50; batching payments into fewer withdrawals cuts those fees to zero.
- Treat Connects as a marketing cost. At $0.15 each, a 16-Connect proposal costs $2.40; track your win rate so you know what each contract really costs to land.
