How DoorDash (Merchants) fees work
DoorDash is the largest food delivery marketplace in the United States. Restaurants and other merchants list a menu, DoorDash markets it to customers in the app, and Dashers deliver. The merchant's cost is a commission on each order, not a subscription.
DoorDash sells three Marketplace plans. Basic charges 15% of the order subtotal on delivery orders, Plus charges 25% and Premier charges 30%; the higher tiers buy a larger delivery area and more visibility, such as inclusion in DashPass. Pickup orders are 6% on every plan. The commission is charged on the subtotal, meaning the menu items, so tax, tip and the customer's delivery and service fees are not part of the base. DoorDash states there are no activation, subscription, software or cancellation fees, and each plan starts with a 0% introductory rate: 7 days on Basic, 30 days on Plus and Premier.
Two optional costs exist: a DoorDash tablet at $6 a week after the trial, and marketing tools like Promotions and Sponsored Listings. DoorDash's Online Ordering (Storefront), available on all plans, is commission-free but carries a payment processing fee that the pricing page does not quantify.
- Basic plan: 15% of the order subtotal on delivery orders. 0% introductory rate for the first 7 days.
- Plus plan: 25% of the order subtotal on delivery orders. 0% introductory rate for the first 30 days.
- Premier plan: 30% of the order subtotal on delivery orders. 0% introductory rate for the first 30 days.
- Pickup orders: 6% of the order subtotal on all three plans.
- Fee basis: DoorDash says you pay a percentage of each order's subtotal and nothing else, so tax and customer tips are not commissioned, and there is no separate payment processing line on Marketplace orders.
- No fixed fees: no activation, subscription, software or cancellation fees. A DoorDash tablet costs $6 a week after its trial, and Promotions and Sponsored Listings are optional paid marketing.
- Online Ordering (Storefront): orders through your own DoorDash-powered site are commission-free but carry a payment processing fee. DoorDash does not state the rate on its pricing page.
Ways to keep more of each DoorDash (Merchants) sale
- Start on Basic unless you need the wider delivery radius. On a $40 order the jump from Basic to Premier costs $6 more per order; the extra volume has to cover that.
- Push pickup. A $40 pickup order costs $2.40 in commission instead of $6.00 to $12.00, and you keep the customer relationship.
- Use the introductory 0% period to test which plan's radius actually brings orders before committing.
- Set DoorDash menu prices with the commission built in. A 15% commission needs about an 18% markup to get back to your in-store margin; 30% needs about 43%.
- Route repeat customers to Online Ordering by DoorDash, which is commission-free apart from payment processing.
