Worked example
An LP sells for $30 with $6 shipping, so the buyer pays $36. Discogs takes 9% of $36 = $3.24, between the $0.10 minimum and $150 maximum. PayPal takes 3.49% of $36 plus $0.49 = $1.75 from the same payment. Total fees are $4.99 and $31.01 lands in your PayPal balance. After the $10 you paid for the record and $5 to ship it, profit is $16.01.
How Discogs fees work
Discogs is the database and marketplace for physical music: vinyl, CDs, cassettes and other formats, matched to a catalog of specific pressings. Sellers are collectors thinning their shelves, record stores and full-time dealers, and buyers come for exact editions rather than bargains. Listing against the database is free and takes seconds once the release exists.
The fee is a single percentage. When an order is paid, Discogs charges 9% of the item price plus the shipping cost, with a minimum of $0.10 and a maximum of $150 per item-and-shipping total. The 9% does not apply to sales tax or to what other companies charge. Since Discogs moved to its PayPal Payments Solution, the selling fee is deducted automatically from the buyer's payment (it shows on your PayPal statement as a Partner Fee or Partner Commission), so there are no more monthly invoices.
PayPal's own processing fee comes out of the same payment. Discogs does not state that rate; for a US seller receiving a PayPal Checkout payment it is PayPal's published commercial rate of 3.49% + $0.49 per transaction. On a $36 order the two fees together are about $4.99, roughly 14% of what the buyer paid, which is why cheap records with high shipping are hard to sell profitably here. The selling fee rose from 8% to 9% on May 22, 2023.

- Refunds: if you refund an order, Discogs refunds the selling fee to your linked PayPal account according to its refund rules; PayPal's fixed fee is generally not returned.
Ways to keep more of each Discogs sale
- Shipping is inside the 9%, so charge real postage and pick the cheapest safe service; every $1 of shipping costs $0.12 in Discogs and PayPal fees.
- The $0.49 PayPal fixed fee makes $5 singles unprofitable on their own: fees on a $5 record with $4 shipping are about $1.61, 18% of the order. Encourage combined orders with a per-item shipping discount.
- The 9% caps at $150, so a $2,000 rare pressing pays $150 to Discogs, not $180. PayPal's 3.49% has no cap, so high-value sales still cost about 11% all in.
- Grade conservatively. Returns for grading disputes cost you the shipping both ways and PayPal keeps its fixed fee even when Discogs refunds its 9%.
- Keep your PayPal statement: gross payment, Partner Commission and PayPal fee are separate lines, and you will need them for the fee deduction against your 1099-K.
