Worked example
A $4.99 ebook with a 2 MB file on the 70% option has a delivery cost of 2 x $0.15 = $0.30. KDP's royalty is 70% of ($4.99 - $0.30) = 70% of $4.69 = $3.28. Amazon keeps the other $1.71: 30% of $4.99 ($1.50) plus 70% of the $0.30 delivery cost ($0.21). With no cost per sale, profit is $3.28.
How Amazon KDP fees work
Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is Amazon's self-publishing platform for ebooks, paperbacks, and hardcovers. There is no fee to publish; Amazon takes its share out of each sale and pays you the royalty.
For ebooks you choose one of two royalty options. The 70% option pays 70% of your list price minus delivery costs, and requires an Amazon.com list price between $2.99 and $12.99 (the ceiling rose from $9.99 on July 7, 2026). Delivery cost on Amazon.com is $0.15 per megabyte of your converted file, with a $0.01 minimum, and KDP subtracts it before applying the 70%. The 35% option pays 35% of list price with no delivery cost, and allows prices from $0.99 (for files under 3 MB) up to $200.
The arithmetic on a typical novel: a $4.99 ebook with a 2 MB file earns 70% of ($4.99 minus $0.30), or $3.28. The same book at 35% would earn $1.75. A $2.99 book with a small 0.4 MB file earns $2.05, the figure most authors recognize from the KDP pricing page.
Delivery cost is what makes file size matter. A 20 MB illustrated book on the 70% option loses $3.00 in delivery before the split, so a $4.99 price would net only $1.39; the 35% option, with no delivery cost, would pay $1.75. Public domain titles and sales in countries outside KDP's 70% list are paid at 35%.
- 70% royalty option: royalty = 70% x (list price without VAT - delivery cost). Available only for Amazon.com list prices from $2.99 to $12.99, and only on sales to customers in the countries KDP lists for the 70% option; other sales pay 35%. Public domain books are not eligible.
- 35% royalty option: royalty = 35% x list price, with no delivery cost deducted. Minimum list price on Amazon.com is $0.99 for files under 3 MB, $1.99 for 3 to 10 MB, and $2.99 for 10 MB or more; the maximum is $200.
- Delivery cost (70% option only): $0.15 per MB on Amazon.com, based on the converted file size rounded up to the nearest kilobyte, with the cost rounded to two decimals and a $0.01 minimum. KDP says the average is about $0.06 per unit. Because it is subtracted before the 70% is applied, each MB costs you $0.105 of royalty.
- Amazon's share: on the 70% option Amazon keeps 30% of list price plus 70% of the delivery cost; on the 35% option it keeps 65% of list price. There are no listing, setup, or monthly fees.
- Paperbacks (not modeled here): royalty is 50% or 60% of list price depending on list price and marketplace, minus printing cost. Amazon.com black-ink printing cost is $2.30 per book for 24 to 110 pages, or $1.00 + $0.012 per page for 110 to 828 pages; premium color is $3.60 for 24 to 40 pages or $1.00 + $0.065 per page; standard color is $1.00 + $0.0255 per page for 72 to 600 pages.
- Currency and VAT: royalties are calculated on list price without VAT. This calculator covers Amazon.com sales in USD; other marketplaces have their own price bands and delivery rates.
Ways to keep more of each Amazon KDP sale
- Price at $2.99 or above and take 70%. At $2.99 the 70% option pays about $2.05 on a small file; the 35% option on the same book pays $1.05.
- Shrink your file. Every MB costs $0.105 of royalty on the 70% option, so compressing images in a 15 MB book to 5 MB adds about $1.05 per sale.
- Compare 35% for very large files. When the file is big enough that 70% x (price - delivery) is less than 35% x price, switch: at $4.99 that crossover is about 16.6 MB.
- Use the $12.99 ceiling for nonfiction. Since July 7, 2026 you can price up to $12.99 and still earn 70%; at $12.99 with a 1 MB file that is just under $9 per sale instead of $4.55 at 35%.
