Worked example
An antique sells for $150 in a shop that makes 10 sales a month. The service fee is 9.9% of $150 = $14.85, since the sale is under $2,500. The $45 monthly maintenance fee spread over 10 sales adds $4.50 per sale. Fees total $19.35, leaving $130.65 of the $150. After the $60 the dealer paid for the piece, profit is $70.65. Your PayPal or card-processing fee is charged separately by your own processor.
How Ruby Lane fees work
Ruby Lane is a long-running online marketplace for antiques, vintage collectibles, jewelry, art, and fine porcelain, glass, and silver. It is built for dealers rather than casual sellers: every seller runs a shop, listings are reviewed against category standards, and buyers pay the shop directly.
The cost of a shop has two parts. The maintenance fee is a flat $45 per month for unlimited items, charged on the 1st of each month and prorated when a shop opens or closes mid-month. There is no setup fee and no per-listing fee. The service fee is charged per item sold: 9.9% of the sale amount up to $2,500, then 5% on the portion between $2,500 and $7,500, then 2.5% on anything above $7,500. A $150 sale pays $14.85; a $10,000 sale pays $247.50 + $250 + $62.50 = $560.
Ruby Lane does not process payments. Buyers pay through the shop's own PayPal or card account, so that processor's fee (PayPal's commercial rate, or your card processor's) comes on top of Ruby Lane's fees and is not included here.
How the $45 spreads across your sales decides your real fee rate. At 10 sales a month it adds $4.50 per sale, bringing the total on a $150 item to 12.9%; at 3 sales a month it adds $15 per sale.
- Maintenance fee: $45 per month for unlimited listings, charged on the 1st of every month and prorated for shops that open or close during the month. It is the minimum cost of keeping a shop open and is due whether or not you sell.
- Service fee, first band: 9.9% of the total amount of the sale up to $2,500, calculated per item. On a $150 sale that is $14.85.
- Service fee, second band: 5% on the portion of the sale over $2,500 up to $7,500. A $5,000 sale pays $247.50 + $125 = $372.50.
- Service fee, third band: 2.5% on the portion of the sale exceeding $7,500. A $10,000 sale pays $560.
- Setup and listing: no setup fee and no per-item listing fee.
- Payment processing: not charged by Ruby Lane. Buyers pay through your own PayPal or card account and that processor's fee applies separately.
- Legacy 'Up to 50 items' plan: $54 per month with a 6.7% service fee on the order total (excluding sales tax) capped at $250 per item. Shops on legacy plans can switch to the Standard plan, but the switch is not reversible.
Ways to keep more of each Ruby Lane sale
- Volume lowers your real rate. The $45 is fixed, so a shop selling 20 items a month pays $2.25 per sale toward it, while a shop selling 3 pays $15 per sale.
- High-ticket items are cheap to sell. Above $2,500 the marginal rate drops to 5%, and above $7,500 to 2.5%, so a $10,000 sale pays an effective 5.6%.
- Compare with Etsy or eBay on total cost, not headline rate: at 10 sales a month a $150 sale costs $19.35 on Ruby Lane before payment processing, which is competitive with eBay's roughly 13.6% plus a per-order fee.
- Watch your processor's fee. Since Ruby Lane does not process payments, PayPal or card fees of about 3% to 3.5% are on top, so budget for roughly 13% to 16% all-in on a $150 sale.
- If you have a slow month, remember the maintenance fee is prorated only when a shop opens or closes, not when it sits idle.
